The S60 R is powered by Volvo's 2.5 litre, turbocharged engine which produces 300bhp at 5500 rpm enabling the S60 R to accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and continue to a top speed of 155 mph. The engine features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) which makes it possible to supply the engine with the maximum amount or air and therefore fuel over a wide rpm range which results in a stronger and more efficient engine.
The S60 R engine delivers maximum torque as early as 1950 rpm and is constant up to 5250 rpm which means that the engine delivers full power and lightning-fast acceleration over the entire engine speed range.
The S60 R is equally at home in rush hour traffic as it is on the motorway or dual carriageway. The 6-speed manual gearbox has been engineered to deliver fast changes and the clutch although reasonably heavy is satisfying to operate and when you master both the result is awesome.
When unleashed on the open road the S60 R proved beyond doubt that it is a true high performance sports saloon, able to deliver exhilarating performance. Fuel economy is a respectable 26.9 mpg on a combined cycle and we averaged 33.6 mpg on a 2000 mile round trip to Scotland. With 300 bhp overtaking is quick and clean so much so that when you look in the rear-view mirror the vehicle behind becomes a speck on the horizon.
However, a word of caution when driving the S60 R - this car is a licence breaker and unless driven with restraint or you could easily find yourself relying on public transport.
The S60 R is equipped with large ventilated disc brakes on the front and rear and aluminum four-piston brake callipers offering higher brake performance ensuring that the S60 R brakes astoundingly well.
