The Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 have been upgraded with new engines, offering more power and improved fuel economy. The on-the-road prices start from £25,995 for the Volvo V70, £25,245 for the Volvo S80 and £28,815 for the Volvo XC70.
The Volvo V70, XC70 and S80 are the first models in the range to receive revised versions of the five-cylinder D5 and D3 turbo-diesel engines.
The Volvo V70 and Volvo S80 also join Volvo's ultra fuel-efficient DRIVe range, taking the total number of Volvo cars which produce below 120g/km of CO2 to seven.D5 - 2.4 Litre Twin Turbo
Volvo's engine experts have boosted the performance and torque of the D5 from 205 hp/420 Nm to 215 hp/440 Nm while as well as reducing fuel consumption by eight per cent.
The twin-turbo setup with two different-sized turbochargers operating in tandem provided added power across a wider rev band. The configuration allows for quick response with powerful acceleration high up the rev range. Piezo-electric fuel injectors ensure precise distribution of fuel in the combustion chamber which promotes efficient fuel combustion and low emissions.
The result of this technology results in a combined fuel consumption figure of 57.7mpg (129 g/km) for the Volvo oS80 D5 with a manual gearbox and start/stop. For the automatic version, 47mpg and 179g/km.
For the Volvo V70, figures for the manual are 55mpg (134g/km) with the automatic returning 46mpg. Fuel consumption in the XC70 FWD is 50 mpg (149 g/km) with a manual gearbox and 42 mpg (179 g/km) with the automatic.D3 - 2.0 Litre Turbo
The mid-performance D3 engine provides 163 hp and 400 Nm of torque was introduced in the Volvo S60 and V60 in 2010. In principle, the engine is the same as the 2.4 litre version, but a shorter stroke reduces displacement to 2.0 litres.
Thanks to fine-tuning of the turbocharger, the two litre diesel engine's driveability is enhanced. The injection system has the same type of piezo-electric fuel injectors as the D5, but tweaked for the smaller engine.
Figures for the Volvo S80 with the D3 engine and a manual gearbox are 57.7mpg (129g/km) 54mpg (137g/km) in the Volvo V70 and 51mpg (144g/km) in the XC70 DRIVe edition.DRIVe - 1.6 Litre Turbo
The four cylinder 1.6 litre diesel fitted to the Volvo C30, S30, V50, S60 and V60 and is now available in the Volvo V70 and S80. The improved engine offers an increase from 109hp to 114hp, whilst keeping a maximum torque of 270Nm. The engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox with start/stop technology, resulting in a figure of 62.8mpg fuel consumption and emissions of 119g/km for both the Volvo V70 and S80.
The DRIVe models feature Brake Energy Regeneration, low rolling resistance tyres and precise fuel management technologies, all of which play a part in the fuel economy and CO2 figures.
