All round vision is very good, and it is nice to see wing mirrors that are a decent size. As an option on all models except the Volkswagen Polo S, is a rear view mirror with an LCD which will dim the mirror automatically when the sensors, located at the front and rear of the car, detect the lights of an oncoming rear vehicle. This works alongside a rain sensor positioned behind the rear-view mirror, for automatic control of the windscreen wipers.
Standard technology on all models apart from the Volkswagen Polo S is a parking sensor system, providing an audible warning for both the front and rear of the car.Safety and Security
The Volkswagen Polo was designed with the aim of receiving five stars in the new stricter and more comprehensive Euro NCAP test, which, it received due to the safety features and technologies.
For example, in the event of a frontal collision, intrusion into the foot well has been lowered by 50%, intrusion in a side impact is reduced by 20%.
As standard, the Polo comes with ABS and ESP as standard across the range. Ventilated disc brakes feature at the front and drum brakes are fitted on the rear - 85PS models and above come with solid rear brake discs as standard.
Due to the Electronic Stabilisation Programme, a skid can be avoided - or corrected - before the driver is aware one has started. Should such an occasion occur, the ESP will apply the brakes to as many wheels as are required and adjust engine power. Situations where this technology can come in helpful include icy or wet conditions, and during over- or under steer around a bend.
The Hydraulic Brake Assist system monitors the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed, and if an emergency stop is detected, the HBA will automatically increase braking pressure and activate the ABS. With this system, stopping distances can be reduced by 25%.
The Volkswagen Polo features a host of airbags including head and thorax airbags which are integrated into the front seatbacks. These are standard across the range as are front head restraints that counteract whiplash, three rear head restraints and Isofix points for two rear child seats.Comfort and Refinement
Inside the Volkswagen Golf GTI, you are greeted with seats in red and black tartan trim. The driver and front passenger are provided with very comfortable sports seats which hold you well with enough support to avoid being thrown around during cornering. On the new Polo, rear space has been increased by 8mm, and there is enough room for two fully grown adults for the outside positions and a smaller passenger for the centre seat.
For the driver, the leather-clad flat-bottomed steering wheel with chrome inserts and subtle "GTI" badge not only looks the part, but is also very comfortable and feels well constructed with high quality materials.
