This range-topping two-litre TSI has a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension design, but lesser versions have a simpler torsion beam rear axle. Ride quality is very good, and the Beetle's handling has been transformed compared with the previous model. It has far greater poise through the bends and feels quite sporty in its driving characteristics.
Ease of UseCompared with the previous model, this Beetle is more spacious inside, but it is still has seats for four, not five. The cabin is well designed with excellent fit and finish, well up to the standard we have come to expect from a Volkswagen. The steering wheel has a flattened lower edge, such as is often found in sports cars. You can specify the Beetle with an interior clad in two-tone leather and fitted with sports seats, with a bespoke look about it. Volkswagen is taking inspiration from BMW's success in offering personalised decor for the MIni, and is pursuing a similar plan for the Beetle, so you can spec a car to be much more individual than is possible with other VW models.
Comfort and RefinementThe Beetle's driving position has plenty of adjustment and it is easy to achieve a very comfortable position behind the wheel. The car's all-round visibility is good, with the curved shape allowing for a good glass area without any of the pillars seeming too obtrusive. Headroom and knee space are pretty reasonably in both front and rear. The car 's refinement is pretty reasonable, considering the powerful engine under the bonnet in this particular version. It remains to be seen how well the lower-powered models behave in this respect.
