If children who are not properly secured in a car are seven times more likely to suffer severe injuries in an accident, why do 40 per cent of parents fail to restrain their children at all during a car journey?
The answer to this worrying question has probably little to do with availability or cost of effective restraints. There is a plethora of good value child seats on the market today, so there really is no acceptable excuse for putting children’s lives at risk, however short the journey.
A long time leader in child safety systems, Vauxhall has just updated its range with four new child seats designed to provide a high level of safety for children of all ages. All are designed to fit perfectly in Vauxhall vehicles, are easy to install and come with removable and washable covers.
The top of the range Vauxhall TOPSAFE ISOFIX seat with transponder (£300) can accommodate children from birth to 18 kg, but for infants up to 6 kg an additional baby cradle insert must be used (£50).
Suitable for Vauxhall vehicles with or without plug-in ISOFIX fittings, this versatile seat can be used in the back seats, or the front passenger seat of vehicles with active airbags, provided the vehicle has been fitted with Automatic Seat Occupancy Detection. Depending on the age of the child, the seat is used either forward or rearward facing.
The seat’s integrated transponder communicates with the vehicle’s Automatic Seat Occupancy Detection System, which is available as a factory-fitted option on most new Vauxhall models, to prevent the deployment of the front passenger airbags. The ISOFIX connections are designed to minimise the risk of incorrect installation.
For babies from birth to 13 kg, the cradle-type Vauxhall BABY-SAFE seat (£90) has an adjustable headrest and harness and comes with a sturdy carrying handle for added convenience. It is designed for rear-facing use on the rear seat using the standard three-point seatbelt.
Another new addition is a seat specifically designed for use on the rear seat of Vauxhall vehicles equipped with the ISOFIX system, or for use with the standard three-point seatbelt. The Vauxhall DUO ISOFIX seat (£180) also has an adjustable headrest and harness, and is designed for children from nine to 18 kg.
Older children from 15 - 36 kg can be kept secure and comfortable in the Vauxhall KID seat (£90). This fits forward facing on the rear seat using the standard three-point seatbelt. Its backrest and adjustable headrest allow this seat to grow with the child.
All four new seat designs are available from Vauxhall Retailers throughout the country, or can be ordered online for home delivery from the Vauxhall accessory website at www.vauxhall.co.uk/accessories
