Ride and Handling

In response to customer feedback, designers have worked hard to improve the ride and handling capabilities on the front-wheel-drive Yaris. It boasts a more rigid upper and lower body structure which in turn offers better response to steering input.

The rear suspension has been upgraded and softer springs have been introduced up front. In addition, new shock absorber valve technology helps to reduce any vibration from uneven road surfaces.

These features together with a freshly-designed electric power steering system give the driver significant improved steering feel, responsiveness and accuracy. That said, at times, the steering can feel a little too light especially when travelling at pace through a long bend.

We also drove the test car which was fitted with 16-inch wheels along some poorly-maintained roads (similar to many throughout the UK) and the comfort levels inside were still pretty impressive with that efficient suspension system ironing out the creases along the way.

Ease of Use

This is an area where the Yaris truly excels. Its spacious interior can easily accommodate four adults even with the front seats pushed back a fair way.

The generously-sized boot has a capacity of 286 litres which can be increased to 768 litres thanks to the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. Elsewhere there are plenty of handy storage options including a good sized glove-box and cup holders. On the downside, there are a couple of ledges which are not really that practical and would certainly collect dust.

All dials, controls, buttons and read-outs are ideally positioned for driver usability and there is a smart, clutter-free, yet feature-rich feel to the car.

The Icon grade and above also come with Toyota Touch 2 - a high resolution seven-inch touchscreen multi-media system which keeps you connected on the move. It's beautifully easy to operate and introduces the likes of Bluetooth, audio streaming along with climate control, lighting and settings.
