The three rear seats have a 60:40 tumble-fold function so, when there are no passengers enjoying the comfortable roominess, the carrying capacity can be increased from 270- to 625-litres - the maximum is 1,045-litres, packed to the roof. Further storage solutions can be found under the front passenger’s seat, below the centre console and the embossed symbols in the door bins indicate where to store bottles.
A fair indication of the SX4’s performance, dynamics and stability can be gained from the fact that it forms the basis of Suzuki’s new World Rally Championship car. It has all the underlying qualities necessary for the job and even in normal guise, the ride and handling is very good. Although the figures vary little between the petrol and diesel engines, the latter’s extra torque translates as more responsive performance.
As usual, ABS with EBD is standard but I would like to have been given the option of an ESP system. Nevertheless, the chassis structure and safety programme has gained the SX4 a 4-star rating for occupant protection and 3-stars each for pedestrian and child protection. The rear passengers benefit from 3-part Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) seatbelts and ISOFIX-compliant anchors for the outer seats, while at the front, there are frontal airbags as well as side and curtain airbags.
The Suzuki SX4 is a comfortable, capable all-rounder. The 4GRIP version is not going to get you across the Rocky Mountains but it could come in handy in the winter. On the whole, I found the SX4 to be uncomplicated, undemanding and surprisingly, entertaining.
