The new Subaru Forester scored top marks in a severe new frontal crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the USA and the only small SUV to achieve the highest ("good") rating.
When compared to 13 SUV rivals - 11 of them scored "poor" or "marginal".
The small overlap front crash test is designed to replicate when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or object such as a tree or telegraph pole, which happens in around one-in-four accidents.
It also did very well in the Euro NCAP crash safety ratings, scoring 91 per cent for both adult occupant and child occupant protection, pedestrian 73 per cent and safety assist 86 per cent.
This compares to the new Toyota RAV4 that scored adult occupancy 89 per cent, pedestrian 66 per cent, and child occupant 82 per cent and safety assist 66%.
