How It Drove - Performance

The Skoda Octavia vRS estate is powered by a 1.8 litre, 20V turbo engine which develops 180 bhp at 5500 rpm enabling it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 8 seconds and continue to a top speed of 143 mph. Torque reaches a maximum of 235 Nm between 1,950-5,000 rpm.

The vRS estate feels relatively quick but that is subjective and depends what you are used to. Around town the 5-speed gearbox is a little notchy but you do get used to it. You do need to keep the car in the correct rev band for maximum performance and if you are lazy with the gearbox you find yourself waiting for the turbocharger to cut in before the car will perform. We found that the standard ASR (anti-spin regulation) hindered fast pull off's as it inhibits rapid acceleration by snatching power from you and minimising wheel spin.

Performance doesn't necessarily equal poor fuel consumption with the Octavia vRS estate returning 35.3 mpg on a combined cycle. If fuel consumption is an issue we would recommend the 1.9 TDI which returns 54.3 on a combined cycle.

How It Drove - Ride and Handling

The Octavia vRS estate's suspension is 15 mm lower than the standard Octavia which results in a firm but comfortable ride. The power steering is near perfect being direct, well-weighted and offers good feedback although occasionally it did feel unsettled when pushed hard. There is little body roll and the vRS estate corners well, Skoda have engineered an exceptionally stable car with excellent driving dynamics and exceptional levels of grip.

The vRS model is equipped a number of electronically controlled stability features as standard such as EDL (electronic differential lock) and ASR (anti-spin regulation). All-round disc brakes with ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), are standard on the vRS model ensuring that it brakes reassuringly well.
