Under the bonnet, is the same 2.0-litre turbo-charged, petrol engine as the 225 Cup and Lux but for the R26 it has been tweaked to produce 5hp or PS more. The 230PS is produced at 5,500rpm while peak torque of 310Nm arrives at 3,000rpm with 90 per cent of that available at 2,000rpm through to 6,000rpm.

What that means is that there is plenty of oomph on tap most of the time. It takes 6.2 seconds to reach 62mph from standstill and the top speed is 124mph via a very nice, 6-speed, manual gearbox.

Driven with some decorum, the R26 is capable of achieving 24.6mpg on the urban cycle, 42.4mpg on the extra-urban and 33.2mpg for the combined with 200g/km CO2 coming from the two tailpipes. However, with a hot, hot hatch such as this, fuel economy is unlikely to be a top priority and customers will probably be more interested in the throaty rasp from the sports exhaust, which is best experienced at slow speeds or under hard acceleration. It is even better under a bridge, where the sound is amplified.

The underpinning, Cup chassis, has been modified with specific dampers and stiffer springs, so the ride is fairly firm. On the other hand, the damper travel is increased to make it a bit more pleasant and for better handling on uneven surfaces. Further improvements include the stiffening of the anti-roll bar allowing better control through fast bends. Although there is still a bit of torque-steer, the R26 has a limited-slip differential system to maintain grip and that, Renault tells us, makes it close to being a competition car.

So, the going is good but stopping is equally as important and for that the R26 has Brembo, four-pot calipers at the front working on ventilated discs with the help of an 11-inch servo. In simple terms, it stops - quickly.
