In less than seven years since its commercial launch in September 1998, the five millionth 206 has rolled off the production line.
A version of the recently introduced 206 CC HDi takes the honour as the five millionth 206 to be produced. Built at the Mulhouse production facility in France, it is destined for the German market where, for the sixth year in succession, the 206 has been voted ‘Best Imported Small Car’ by readers of Auto Motor Und Sport.
The only other Peugeot to reach the five million mark was the acclaimed 205 back in the mid 90s, but it took the 205 some 15 years to reach this milestone. Therefore, the 206 is destined to become the most successful model ever in the 116 year history of Automobiles Peugeot.
The 206 has been a huge success in the UK, the second largest market for the car outside France, with sales of over 550,000 206s. Available as a 3/5 door hatchback, SW, CC and a van, the 206 was the best selling retail and convertible car for three consecutive years.
Over 3100 206s are produced daily in six production sites – Mulhouse and Poissy in France, Ryton in the UK, Porto Real in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina and Khodro in Iran.
As well as a commercial success, the 206 - in its WRC livery - has been a very successful competition car winning three World Rally Championship titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002 as well as the driver’s title for Marcus Gronholm in 2000 and 2002.
Whether on the road or the World Rally stage, the 206 is an undisputed winner and on course to become the best selling Peugeot yet.
