Gentex, who manufacturer automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based active-safety systems, have announced that the new 2011 Nissan X-TRAIL will feature both technologies, with the Rear Camera Display being offered as standard or as optional equipment on multiple trim levels throughout Europe.
"Nissan has offered the RCD Mirror as an accessory on a number of different vehicles in North America but the X-TRAIL is the first factory-installed programme with the automaker," stated Gentex senior vice president Enoch Jen. "Gentex is excited to work with Nissan on introducing this feature to X-TRAIL drivers. The RCD Mirrors, with graphic overlay lines indicating the vehicle's distance from an object, help drivers to determine the proximity of obstacles behind them. This feature is becoming more popular in Europe."
The RCD Mirror features an LCD that is connected to a video camera mounted at the rear of the Nissan X-TRAIL providing a view behind the vehicle to use whilst reversing. When the reverse gear is engaged, the rear-view display appears automatically through the mirror's reflective surface. When reverse is disengaged, the display disappears.
