Mercedes have given the CLS Coupe and the CLS Shooting Brake an extensive make over for the forthcoming season.
There are new headlight options including MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, a new engine line-up with the introduction of the CLS 220 BlueTEC and the CLS 400 with a 3.5 litre biturbo petrol engine. >Plus the introduction of a nine-speed automatic gearbox for the CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500 models.
All of the five engine options are now Euro 6 compliant - On the diesel front the entry level CLS 220 BlueTEC is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine producing 170 hp / 400Nm. The next engine in the line-up is CLS 250 BlueTEC which produces 204 hp / 500 Nm. Moving up to the CLS 350 BlueTEC and you not only gain more power but two more cylinders, producing 258 hp / 620 Nm.
There three petrol units, V6 CLS 400 with a 3.5 litre bi-turbo engine displacing 333 hp / 480 Nm and the V8 CLS 500 outputting 408 hp / 600 Nm. Plus the CLS 63 AMG 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine that has seen an increase from 557 hp to 585 hp and 720 to 800 Nm
The CLS 220 BlueTEC, CLS 250 BlueTEC, CLS 350 BlueTEC and CLS 500 models feature Mercedes new 9G-TRONIC transmission.
All CLS are now equipped with all-LED headlamps with the option of new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps. -Using the latest technology the camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus provides the information for the illumination. It searches for illuminated oncoming vehicles ahead and is able to drives each of the individual 24 high-performance LEDs in a matrix light source electronically so that individual areas of the road are specifically masked in accordance with the particular situation. This prevents dazzling on coming drivers whilst providing enhanced illumination of the road surface and edge of the carriageway. The system is adaptive monitoring the ‘ideal lighting pattern’ 100 times per second, controlling all of the LEDs individually with each one dimmable in 255 stages.
The lighting system is also control by GPS, and can predict roundabouts and corners to ensure the best possible forward lighting.
Standard-fit now includes COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which can help prevent rear-end collisions - if necessary through autonomous braking. Options include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE� Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE�PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including lateral parking manoeuvres and a 360� camera.
The COMAND Online infotainment system utilizes the new, free-standing 8” display enabling full internet access when the vehicle is stationary. It requires a Bluetooth mobile phone with data connectivity. There is also a media interface for the iPod and iPhone with audio and video playback plus from SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD
COMAND Online introduces apps such as Weather, Google Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download.
The navigation system incorporates 3D hard-disc navigation, topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations as well as display of NASA satellite images. System features include an animated compass and display of Google Maps on the head unit. The navigation system can also provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data in COMAND Online via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.
The new generation Mercedes Benz CLS will go on sale at the end of September 2014, prices are to be announced later this month.
