Mazda6 has won the 2004 Used Family Car of the Year in the Auto Express Used Car Honours, bringing the total awards won for the Mazda6 in the UK since launch in June 2002 up to 16.
"Choosing a winner in the family car category was one of the easiest tasks our judges faced. Having won our 2003 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey outright, we had no qualms about choosing the Mazda6 as our overall victor," commented David Johns, Auto Express editor.
"Not only is the Mazda unerringly reliable, but it’s also a great drive. The 6 has a finely honed chassis that delivers excellent grip and sporty dynamics, while maintaining a ride comfort that’s enough to make some of its rivals jealous.
"Residual values are solid and look set to remain so for the next three years, while there’s a myriad of models to choose from, including a responsive diesel and a stylish estate. The 6’s performance was enough to see off last year’s winner – the Renault Laguna."
If you needed proof that the Auto Express Driver Power survey was the definitive guide to owner satisfaction, then you should look no further than Ed Bartlett for inspiration.
"I bought my Mazda on the basis that it performed so well in the Auto Express Driver Power survey," said the 23-year old train driver from York. "That, coupled to the fact that I think it looks great, has excellent standard equipment for an entry-level model and has loads of room inside made it my only choice."
Ed says the Mazda’s driver appeal is also a big plus point. "It’s fun, practical and handles superbly. Also, the buying experience was a joy – my local dealer was terrific."
"Auto Express readers voted the Mazda6 tops, so it stands to reason that we should do the same," commented Auto Express associate editor Mike Askew.
"Compared to the other cars in this class, it’d be the Mazda for me every time. It’s such a good all-round package," commented TV presenter and Auto Express contributor Mike Brewer.
Mazda marketing director Jeremy Thomson added: "Mazda is delighted to win Auto Express 2004 Used Family Car of the Year. Mazda6 remains our strongest seller at over 2,600 sales for March alone and over 20,000 Mazda6’s sold since its UK launch in 2002.
"Mazda6 Estate, which recently won the What Car? Best Estate 2004 award, also continues its popularity for its practical use of space and the rear seats that fold completely flat thanks to Mazda’s ‘karakuri’ system."
