A remarkable turn of events saw a Bath golfer defy odds of 33,000-to-one and win himself a new £12,000 Mazda car at a charity golf day held recently.
David Chasemore, of Darlington Road, achieved an amazing hole-in-one at a course in Castle Combe, Wiltshire and drove away in a stylish new Mazda3 hatchback supplied by Bath dealership Lansdown Mazda.
David, 46, astonished spectators at the Manor House Golf Club, yet his form approaching the ninth hole could hardly have predicted what was about to occur. He arrived for the event having forgotten his clubs and was forced to hire a set from the pro shop at the course before teeing off.
After a disastrous ‘shotgun’ start on the eighth tee, David proceeded to hit his first two shots of the day out of bounds and forfeit the hole. Dispirited, he continued to the ninth and, using a five-iron he had never played with before, achieved the amazing feat of a hole-in-one and sent the watching crowd into rapture.
Danny Sacco, managing director of Lansdown Mazda in Bath, commented on the atmosphere after the amazing success:
"As soon as I heard all the shouting and cheering, I knew someone had won the car. The normally beautiful and tranquil golf course looked and sounded like a crowded football match!
"Lansdown Mazda has been participating in golf days of this kind since 1990, and through all that time no one has hit a hole-in-one until today. It really is an amazing occurrence when you consider the events leading up to that ninth hole," Danny added.
The day was organised in honour of former Bath and England Rugby Union star Mike Catt in his testimonial year, in association with event agency A Bit Of A Do.
Local businesses were invited to sponsor the event and in response Lansdown Mazda agreed to make a Mazda3 available to anyone achieving a hole-in-one on the ninth hole. After surprising everyone, David even purchased the lucky set of clubs he had borrowed from the Manor House Golf Club for himself.
Lansdown Mazda’s close association with Mike Catt and the Bath community continues after the dealership presented Mike with a Mazda RX-8 sports car earlier this year in honour of his service to Bath Rugby Club.
