Mazda are gunning for the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa with the unveiling of their new Mazda2.
It will go on sale in Japan in the autumn of 2015, with a European launch date yet to be announced. It will be built at Mazda's Hofu plant south-east of Hiroshima, Japan.
At this stage technical details and prices for Europe are a fair way off but what we do know is that it will feature either a diesel SKYACTIV-D 1.5 or petrol SKYACTIV-G 1.5 engine amongst its power trains, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions.
The interior will move into another league with the introduction of tablet-style technology on the dashboard and the minimal of switchgear. And it will be offer with the latest i-ACTIVSENSE active safety equipment and the MZD Connect in-car connectivity system.
