The new seven-seat Kia Carens will go on sale on the 1st May priced from £17,895.
This is the third-generation Carens has a smaller footprint than its predecessor it is 'shorter, 15mm narrower and 45mm lower. Yet thanks to a 50mm increase in wheelbase and lower seat positions it has improved head, leg and shoulder room in all three rows of seats, whilst delivering the additional benefits of increased luggage space and a lower loading lip. The overall height of 1605mm is one of the lowest in class and 5mm lower to that of the Kia Soul.
There are now three individual sliding and reclining centre-row seats in place of a split bench and two separate seats in the rear, all of which fold flat. There is a longer, wider and taller luggage area and an under-floor compartment to store the cargo screen when not in use. The front passenger's seat also folds flat to allow exceptionally long loads to be carried. There are standardcornering lights and LED daytime running lamps.
There will be the option from launch of three engines including one petrol and two turbodiesels. Kia's Intelligent Stop & Go (ISG) system is standard on all manual-gearbox models.
The petrol derivative is powered by the 1.6-litre Gamma GDi direct-injection unit that we have seen in other models in the Kia range. It outputs 133bhp and 165Nm of torque, which equates to 0-60 mph time of 10.9 seconds and top speed of 115 mph. The official combined fuel figure is 44.1 mpg with CO2 emissions of 149 g/km.
There is a choice of two output diesels based on the 1.7-litre turbocharged unit developing either 114bhp/260Nm or 134bhp/330Nm. The lower output engine delivers maximum torque from 1,250 to 2,750rpm and will achieve 0-60mph in 12.6 seconds with a 112mph top speed. The more powerful engine option develops its 330Nm between 2,000 and 2,500rpm, which allows 0-60mph to be completed in 10.0 seconds and a top speed of 119mph. Official combined cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 60.1mpg and 124g/km and 56.4mpg and 132g/km respectively.
