Drivers choosing the new Ford Mondeo Zetec Nav model could find themselves beating the traffic jams. A satellite navigation system, fitted as standard, includes the RDS-TMC traffic information service from specialist traffic data company ITIS Holdings Plc as an integral function. When the Mondeo Zetec Nav’s satellite navigation system receives a traffic message from ITIS, which holds the exclusive licence to broadcast RDS-TMC messages, the Mondeo Zetec Nav’s satellite navigation system will not only alert the driver to traffic delays en route, but automatically suggests a detour or alternative route to avoid the hold-up ahead.

Priced at just £375.00 more than the standard Ford Mondeo Zetec, the Mondeo Zetec Nav is the first model from Ford to include an RDS-TMC-enabled satellite navigation system as standard. RDS-TMC (Radio Data System – Traffic Message Channel) will often show up as an illuminated function on an in-car radio head unit or satellite navigation system, but is not always operative: access to ITIS’ TMC messages is dependent on the automotive manufacturer or aftermarket equipment supplier having reached agreement with ITIS to enable the TMC operation.

Satellite navigation systems are currently the most dynamic receivers for TMC messages, as they allow not only the driver to be alerted to delays, but will help provide a solution by automatically calculating an alternative route to avoid congestion and traffic jams.

The Ford Mondeo Zetec Nav is designed to appeal particularly to business drivers, who want the benefits of TMC-enabled satellite navigation without the costs of purchasing it separately as aftermarket equipment. Peter Fleet, Ford of Britain Marketing Director said, "The Ford Mondeo Zetec Nav caters for fleet customers who are often not allowed to specify additional options on their company cars. It will also appeal to retail customers who increasingly want the benefits that satellite navigation systems offer."

Stuart Marks, Chief Executive of ITIS Holdings Plc, commented, "Ford has taken a strategic step to provide its customers with factory-installed satellite navigation equipment on mainstream models, reflecting the affordable pricing levels reached by such factory-installed equipment. The growth of satellite navigation systems installed as standard in cars means consumers have increased opportunities to take advantage of the RDS-TMC service supplied exclusively by ITIS."
