BMW Great Britain has announced pricing for the forthcoming 630i and 535d models. Powered by the world’s lightest six-cylinder engine, the BMW 630i Coupé is priced at £45,255 on-the-road, while the 630i Convertible with its unique fin-structure roof costs £50,655. Pricing for BMW’s most powerful flagship diesel, the 535d, starts from £36,575 for the Saloon with the Touring costing £38,600.
The BMW 630i Coupé and Convertible specification mirrors that of the more powerful 645Ci model, apart from the standard five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. This means owners of the 258bhp 3.0-litre petrol-engined GT will benefit from Dynamic Stability Control, a six-speed manual transmission, bi-xenon headlights, Park Distance Control, Dakota leather interior and electrical seat adjustment, all of which are standard. The performance figures for the 630i are just as impressive – it accelerates from zero to 62mph in 6.5 seconds (6.9 seconds for the Convertible) before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
For drivers desiring low-down torque, effortless acceleration combined with economical running costs and the benefits of EU4 compliancy, the BMW 535d covers all bases. Available in either Saloon or Touring variants the car delivers 272bhp and 560Nm of torque courtesy of the variable twin turbocharger arrangement mated to the 3.0-litre engine.
In an engine first for a production car, the sequential layout sees a smaller turbo provide maximum performance from idle to low engine speeds – 500Nm of torque at 1,500rpm – but as the revs build a larger turbo helps to further compress the air for a second, seamless boost of power. At higher speeds the engine relies on the larger turbocharger. The result of this is a continuous surge of acceleration making for a zero to 62mph time of 6.5 seconds. Even with its huge performance potential the 535d still posts a combined fuel consumption 35.3mpg.
Both the BMW 630i and the 535d will be launched in the UK in October 2004.BMW 6 Series prices
