The BMW group is heading towards a record year of sales, with a high all time sales result for May 2011. In total, 147,563 BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce vehicles were delivered to customers, a 22.1% increase over the previous year's 120,850, with deliveries 20.7% up, at 667,511 vehicles, compared to 5552,866 for 2010.
Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, Ian Robertson said: "This was the most successful May the company has ever reported in sales. Our young vehicle portfolio continues to perform strongly and we are seeing healthy balanced growth worldwide. There is a strong demand for BMW X vehicles and the BMW 5 Series, which has further strengthened its position as segment leader. Robertson added: “We are looking forward to even more momentum at the end of the year with the September launch of the new BMW 1 Series in Europe. We are well on course to maintain our position as the world's leading manufacturer of premium vehicles throughout 2011."
The three most important markets for BMW - Germany, USE and China- made strong retail gains. In Germany, 29,372 vehicles were registered, up from 22,993 for 2010. USA saw an increase of 19.7% to 26,452 units from the 22,092 units of previous year. In mainland China, 21,150 deliveries of BMW Group vehicles were completed, up from 13,998 for 2010 (51.1%).
All major European markets saw strong increases, as did the "BRIKT" markets: Brazil (+57.3%), Russia (58.3%), India (+160.9%), Korea (+49.1%) and Turkey (130.2%).
The BMW brand volumes gained a 19% increase for May 2011 at 121,168 vehicles for this year, 101,781 the previous year. Sales of the BMW brand's vehicles reached 555,429 units compared to 466,088 for the previous year.
The new BMW X3 sold 10,182 units for May 2011, compared to 4,371 for 2010 (132.9% increase). The BMW 5 Series reached a total sales figure of 26,457 (previous year 16,186/ 63.5% increase).
Sales for the MINI brand reached 26,104 vehicles up from 18,849 for 2010, an increase of 38.5%. The number of MINI vehicles through May rose to 110,802 for 2011, compared to 2010's 86,100, a rise of 28.7%. MINI expects the MINI Countryman to boost sales to a record number during 2011.
