This September, Volvo Car Corporation launches a global environmental programme, the Volvo Adventure For Young Environmentalists, which enables young people around the world to make a difference in their local environment.
In the UK, the Young Environmentalists scheme provides young people (10 to 16 year olds) with an opportunity to gain support, recognition and financial reward for practical, local environmental activities and the chance to compete for an international award.
Ten Top Awards for UK Schools and Groups
Ten Volvo Young Environmentalist Awards are available, each worth £500. The scheme is designed to support geography and citizenship curricula and the project must address one of the following issues - biodiversity, energy, transport, water or waste and recycling. The submission deadline is 31 December 2003 and the awards will be announced in January 2004.
Environment Workshop with Chris Packham
One chosen school or youth group will have the chance to meet and take part in a workshop with wildlife TV presenter, author and photographer, Chris Packham. Volvo will tailor the environmental education workshop to suit the chosen school or youth group's curricular needs.
Volvo Adventure Conference in Sweden - Top Prize Award of $10,000
A panel of UK judges will then select an overall winning group from the 10 UK award winners to join with other young environmentalists from all over the world at a Volvo conference and ceremony in Gothenburg, Sweden in late spring 2004. Three international projects will be selected for global award recognition and award prizes worth up to US$10,000.
"I’m confident that we will receive as many high quality competing projects as last year," says Sven Eckerstein, Senior Vice President and Deputy CEO of Volvo Car Corporation. "The participants in the Volvo Adventure are the decision-makers of tomorrow. We want to encourage young people to take on practical local environmental projects and thereby increase environmental awareness," he continues.
The Volvo Young Environmentalists scheme is part of Volvo’s commitment to a global environmental policy. Since Volvo launched a young Environmentalist scheme in the UK in 1997, over 9,000 schools and groups in England, Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland have participated and more than £360,000 worth of grants have been awarded. These awards have enabled thousands of young people to carry out environmental projects which have made a real difference in their local area.Published 27 September 2003
