An inspirational team of the UK's top sailors are ready to go for Gold in Athens and again make sailing Britain's most successful sport thanks to valuable support from Volvo.

Volvo Car UK established ‘Team Volvo for Life’ to represent and support the best of British sailing, and provides them with a car of their choice from the Volvo range.

Team Volvo for Life is represented in Athens by:

  • Ben Ainslie (MBE) - Laser class Sydney 2000 Gold and Atlanta 1996 Silver medallist
  • Shirley Robertson (MBE) – Sydney 2000 Gold medallist and her crew Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb
  • Chris Draper and Sydney 2000 Silver medallist Simon Hiscocks
  • Iain Percy - Sydney 2000 Gold medallist and Steve Mitchell
  • Paul Goodison who is looking to repeat Ben Ainslie’s win in the Laser class

‘Team Volvo for Life’ also works with the next generation of British sailors through Volvo’s grass roots sailing sponsorships inspiring youngsters to follow in their footsteps with the same passion and determination.

Shirley Robertson explains why Volvo’s support of their training campaign has been so essential:

"Volvo’s support has been crucial. We spend up to 10 months a year training and competing abroad and tow our boat all over Europe with our Volvo. We put our support motorboat on the XC90's roof and its engine inside – all this along with three girls! It brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘fully loaded’.

"We constantly drive back and forth across Europe in total comfort and safety - towing our boat, and relying on the Volvo satellite navigation system to get us from Athens to France to Palma to Spain. We’ve named the navigation system ‘George’, as I don't think we’d arrive anywhere without him - he is a godsend!"

Two other seasoned sailors, Neal and Lisa McDonald, are also part of ‘Team Volvo for Life’ and expect to be joint skippers of an entry in the next round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race starting in November 2005.
