Apart from guaranteed awesome performance from a five-cylinder, 2.5 turbo engine with 300bhp and 400Nm of torque, an active ‘Four-C’ (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) chassis uses the latest multiplex computer system supplying information to adjust suspension settings 500 times a second and monitors the electronic Haldex AWD system to maximise traction, road-holding, stability and control. For ‘performance on demand’ it also offers three different chassis settings available at the push of a button to suit a driver’s desires on any occasion: Comfort, Sport and Advanced Sport:
Comfort – optimises ride comfort using ‘sky hook’ control technology that makes the car feel like it is suspended from an artificial horizon
Sport – mid-setting for everyday sporting driving style, also using ‘sky hook’ control technology
Advanced Sport – uncompromising sports car handling, prioritising maximum driver feedback and pleasure using ‘direct road contact’ technology
The exterior of both models has consciously been kept as subtle and stylish as possible without resorting to unnecessary brash add-ons to boast about the car’s performance. The performance speaks for itself, and at a quick glance the R models could be mistaken for a regular S60 or V70.
A new and more aerodynamic front nose section, matt-silver grille surround, deeper front spoiler with larger air intakes, plus unique 18in alloy wheels, ‘aero’ door mirrors and a minimal rear spoiler (just enough to reduce rear end lift by 20 per cent) are all that hint at the car’s hidden reserves.
But internally, the R-concept models have plenty of special touches, such as the blue chronograph-inspired dials with blue faces, additional leather detailing and blue stitching to door handles and steering wheel, a choice of special soft leather upholstery (including optional natural analine leather), and sculptured sports seats complemented by brushed aluminium inserts of the dashboard and door panels.
The S60 R and V70 R are assured of exclusivity, with only
a total of about 800 expected to be sold per annum in the
UK. The cars should be in the showrooms in late spring 2003,
and are expected to retail at between approximately £34,000
to £38,000. Full specifications and final pricing will
be available nearer the launch.
