Volvo V50 Sportswagon Review

Volvo V50 T5 SE Sport
When unleashed on the open road the Volvo V50 T5 proved beyond doubt that it is a true sports estate, delivering exceptional performance. It also has the personality to match offering an exhilarating yet reassuring drive.
The slick 6-speed manual gearbox complemented the engine perfectly and when you drop it down a couple of gears it brings the turbo-charger to life and although the 5-cylinder, 2.5 litre engine feels relaxed and flexible, it does have a satisfying growl when you press on.
The V50 T5 is also a powerful Motorway cruiser which enables you to cover great distances in comfort and has more than adequate power for clean, safe overtaking.
The Dual CVVT (Continuously variable valve timing) improves low-end torque (more torque at low and medium speeds) and cuts fuel consumption.
Overall the engine is satisfying and we returned an average fuel consumption of approx 34 mpg whilst touring.
How It Drove - Ride/Handling
Based on the same platform as the new Ford Focus and the Mazda3, the Volvo V50 T5 has 34% greater torsional rigidity than the previous V40 model maximising the performance of the new multi-link rear suspension.
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is fitted as standard and whilst keeping the vehicle within the parameters of safe driving we found the Volvo V50 to be nimble, flexible and responsive. Push it too hard and you will soon find it stepping out of line and as you would expect of Volvo the DSTC soon cuts in and puts you right back on course.
