Volvo S80 Review

Volvo S80 ReviewVolvo S80 Review | Part Two

For a big car the Volvo S80 DRIVe shows what can be achieved with some intelligent fuel-saving technology.

Safety and Security

It’s a Volvo, so you know that safety is high on the design priority list. Volvo has a team of safety engineers on permanent call to attend any crash within 100 miles of the company headquarters in Gothenburg, with the express aim of identifying the cause and what can be learned from it. Although this latest model S80 has not been tested under the Euro NCAP crash safety scheme, it has been designed to achieve 5 stars. A standard alarm system takes car of security.

Infotainment

The car comes with a good quality standard audio system, with an upgrade available for an additional £410. Bluetooth connectivity is standard, allowing hand-free phone use and music stream from a portable player such as an iPod. There are steering column controls to operate the audio listening choice and volume.

Rivals
  • Mercedes-Benz E200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY
  • BMW 520D EfficientDynamics
What We Liked
  • Roomy, comfortable saloon
  • Excellent fuel economy for a car this size
  • Cool Swedish interior design
  • Only a 1.6 but performs well
What We Disliked
  • Body styling a bit drab
  • Doesn’t do much for your image
What We'd Like To See
  • Even better mpg
Conclusion

For a big car the Volvo S80 DRIVe shows what can be achieved with some intelligent fuel-saving technology. Large car body need not mean large thirst at the pumps. Performance-wise it is no ball of fire, but the combination of reasonable performance and excellent economy is hard to hard with. From its modestly sized but adequately effective engine to its good mpg and CO2, the big Volvo shows a good route forward.
