Volvo S40 Review
The new Volvo S40 made its UK debut in March 2004 replacing the outgoing V40 model. Designed as a 'compact, premium four-door saloon' the new S40 is marketed at the younger customer who demands a 'premium four-door saloon with style, comfort and refinement.
With the introduction of the new S40 Volvo hope to compete with Audi, BMW, & Mercedes-Benz - we tested the S40 2.0D SE to see how Volvo fare within the competitive world of premium compact saloons.
How It Drove - Performance
The Volvo S40D is powered by a four-cylinder, 2.0 litre, turbocharged diesel engine which produces 136bhp at 4000 rpm enabling it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 9.5 seconds and continue to a top speed of 130 mph.
The 2.0 diesel engine is not the quietest of engines but it does offer good performance and we returned on average approx 50mpg. The 6-speed manual gearbox is smooth and the light gearchange's were effortless.
