Volkswagen Golf R (2014)

Volkswagen has announced the new Golf R which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Volkswagen Golf R Engine

The Golf R is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol (EA888 TSI) engine producing 300 PS and 280 lbs ft, with power being delivered via the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system. With 300 PS on tap the ‘R’ is able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds or 4.9 with DSG – and will carry on to a limited 155 mph.

The fifth generation Haldex 4MOTION under low loads will decouple the rear axle to save fuel but under load can deliver 100 per cent of power to the rear.

On the combined cycle it will achieve 39.8 mpg (40.9 with DSG) and CO2 emissions are 159 g/km.

Volkswagen Golf R Suspension

The ride height is 20 mm lower than a standard Golf and 5 mm lower than the GTI – and sits on bespoke springs and dampers – it also features progressive steering like the GTI. There will also be the option of Adaptive Chassis Control.

Volkswagen Golf R Styling

The Golf ‘R’ rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres, the brake calipers are black-painted with ‘R’ logos. There is a bespoke radiator grille with ‘R’ logo and new bumper with large air inlets. The daytime running lights are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights. At the rear, there are smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and four chrome-tipped exhaust pipes – two at either side.

The interior features sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke with blue needles.
