an extra 150 bhp and 140lb ft of torque ...

The new Vauxhall VXR8 GTS gains 150 bhp and new engine, and has gone sale priced from £54,999. It is available to order now with the first deliveries expected around the end of the year.

The 6.2 litre supercharged LSA V8 engine is the same has found in the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and develops 576bhp and 545lb ft of torque, an increase of 150bhp and 140lb ft over the outgoing, LS3-engined VXR8. Vauxhall have not released the performance data but it is going to be a lot quicker than the 0-60 mph (4.9 seconds) time of the LS3 powered models, we would expect sub 4.0 seconds with a top speed of 180 mph+, although the top speed probably will be limited.

The new VXR8’s Eaton supercharger has 4-lobe rotors, 9psi boost and 1.9 litres of air per revolution. Unlike a turbocharged car, the Eaton supercharger provides the VXR8 with stronger and more linear performance across its entire rev-range. Other LSA features include:

  • Stand-alone water to air charge cooling system
  • Separate transmission and differential cooling system
  • Water to oil engine cooling system
  • Bi-modal air-intake system
  • High-flow exhaust manifolds and exhaust system with Bi-modal silencers

Delivering drive to the rear axle is the latest MG9 spec 6-speed manual transmission with oil cooler and twin-plate clutch (an optional 6-speed automatic transmission is also available).

To control the extra power the GTS is now fitted with Brake Torque Vectoring technology to help reduce understeer as well as the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system.

The new VXR8 will ride on Continental 255/35 R20 (front) and 275/35 R20 (rear) tyres and will feature GM’s third-generation Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) with three independent settings: Touring, Sport and Track. Hardware and software improvements combine to deliver greater body control and improved ride. To stop the VXR8 GTS the brakes have been improved with the fitment of AP forged 6-piston calipers with two-piece larger discs at the front and rear – and bigger pads.

The VXR8 has also been under the knife, there is a new front end to accommodate the new engine and to aid cooling. The daytime running lights can now operate when the headlights are turned on. At the rear there are LED tail lamps, while the ‘diffuser’ rear fascia houses quad exhaust outlets finished in shadow chrome. And there is a body-coloured rear spoiler with black accents.

The interior has been made over with an upgraded instrument panel with suede-style inserts, a new instrument cluster, gauges, centre console, appliqués and door trims.

Technology includes Side Blind Zone Alert with Reverse Traffic Alert, Automatic Park Assist, Front and Rear Park Assist, Reversing Camera and Passive Entry/Push Button Start –plus there is a Head Up Display as standard which displays the vehicle speed, engine temperature and G-force. There is also Forward Collision Alert with autonomous braking and Lane Departure Warning as standard.
