ES3 - Toyota's Concept Of The Near Future

Published: 22nd November 2002
Toyota ES3

The ES3 is a small, lightweight concept car designed to showcase Toyota’s environmental technologies for high fuel efficiency, clean emissions and recycling – all of which are achievable now in this running prototype.
  • Advanced prototype concept
  • Ultra-clean diesel engine
  • 'Stop & Go' powertrain management
  • Fuel consumption of 2.7 litres/100km (71g/km CO2)
  • Aluminium body brings weight to 700kg
  • Bio-degradable plastic interior trim
ES3 could be one of the future, practical alternatives for vehicles propelled by internal combustion engines before the full-scale introduction of fuel cell cars.

ES3 will transport four adults in comfort along the city streets and open highways of the 21st century with greatly reduced effect on the environment. But it also sets out to prove environmentally-friendly cars can be fun to drive too.

With an all-up weight of just 700kg and a super efficient 1.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, ES3 offers lively performance, with a 0-100km/h acceleration of about 10 seconds. So it is appropriate that ES3 stands for: Eco Spirit Cubic.

Cubic also refers to the three pillars of the design brief:

1: to achieve the world’s best fuel consumption in 4-passenger cars

2: to achieve the world’s cleanest exhaust emissions among diesel engines

3: to develop future technologies for recycling
