Increased dimensions mean enhanced accommodation

The interior matches the external styling in spirit as well as design. While the refined atmosphere encourages occupants to relax and enjoy the ride, its sporty undertones signal the Grand Vitara’s dual personality and dynamic capabilities. Bold accents blend with classic forms in an uncluttered layout. The predominantly black interior uses bold silver highlights and circular motifs, while the seat materials use geometric designs and dimpled surfaces: high quality materials pleasing to the eye and touch.

Suzuki’s renowned attention to detail is apparent in the quality fit and finish; the smooth interior surfaces and rounded edges serve to minimise the likelihood of minor injury during aggressive off-roading, as well as looking good.

Focused chassis and body engineering plus extensive noise and vibration reduction measures have ensured smooth, relaxing progress and the new independent rear suspension offers a quantum leap in ride comfort both on and off-road.

The relatively long wheelbase of both 3 and 5-door models which effectively ‘pushes’ the front wheels forwards, permits more of the vehicle’s length to be given over to passengers and their luggage. As a result, front and rear legroom is comparable to that of models from a higher segment. The tandem distance - the distance between front and rear occupants’ hip points and a useful indicator of cabin space - is an excellent 715mm in the 3-door and 835mm in the 5-door, the latter more akin to large saloons.

The built-in ladder frame concept permits floor height and overall height to be kept relatively low while still providing ample headroom and the ground clearance essential for off road adventuring. It of course also permits easier access and loading. The shallow sloping sides, generous window area and ample leg, shoulder and headroom contribute to a roomy overall atmosphere. Rear seat passengers, like those in front, also have the benefit of reclining seats.

The load area can be opened up by folding and tumbling forward the rear seats. The split - both seat backs and bases - is 50:50 in 3-door and 60:40 in 5-door models. The rear seat in the 5-door also has a centre armrest. Little effort is required to collapse them and the seat backs are released by a lever atop the seat on 5-door models - accessible either from the load area or from the rear door - or by a lever at the seat base on 3-door models. The seat bases are released by a lever at their rear to tumble the seat fully forward.

The capacious luggage area also has an under floor compartment which can accommodate items such as a first aid kit and warning triangle. Additional storage for small items is also provided by pockets in the tailgate and side trim. All models are equipped with luggage covers, that on the 5-door folding in half to allow easier access to the load bay; both items feature ‘blinds’ at their leading edge to accommodate the rear seat reclining feature.

All major controls are positioned for intuitive operation. The main instrument cluster presents at-a-glance information via three cylinder-style dials housed beneath a large binnacle and back-lit for clarity. Remote controls for the standard radio/CD player are integrated into the tilt adjustable three spoke steering wheel, while electric window and door mirror switches are located in the door armrests.

The distinctive centre panel has a metallic outer trim surrounding a black inner finish. Located on its top edge is a digital display providing outside temperature, and real-time fuel consumption. Below are the air vents, the integrated audio system, the one-touch/rotary controls for the standard automatic climate control, and - on the 5-door - the rotary switch for the four-wheel drive system. At the base of the panel and immediately ahead of the gear lever is a storage compartment whose damped lid is opened via a push button.

Stylish circular air outlets, with metallic trim on five door models, flank the fascia on either side.
