smart stole the show at the recent Auto Express New Car Honours Awards for 2003, with accolades for every model in the iconic brand’s ever-expanding product range.

Even before its UK launch, the compact and curvaceous smart roadster walked away with the title of Best Roadster, beating competition from Porsche. For the second year running, the smart city-coupé beat its urban rivals to take the award for Best City Car.

According to the Auto Express team of motoring experts, the roadster was this year’s runaway winner in the Best Roadster category. "The smart roadster is one of the most exciting sports cars to hit the sector in recent years," said David Johns, Editor of Auto Express. "Light, simple and affordable and in keeping with smart tradition, the roadster throws design convention out of the window."

He heaped praise on the driveability of the car. "The biggest revelation is the way the roadster drives. It handles just like a sports car should. Nimble and light on its feet, it grips the road better than a white line and involves the driver over every inch of the road. A brilliant back to basics sportscar."

Sweeping aside the competition, the smart city-coupe was praised for the way it puts the fun back into motoring. Described as utterly unique to drive, Auto Express described commuting in the ultra-cool city car as not only bearable, but actually enjoyable.

Jeremy Simpson, Head of smart in the UK, said: "We’re delighted that all models in the smart portfolio have been recognised for such prestigious awards. This independent endorsement gives customers re-assurance that the smart brand can offer them urban motoring or drop top sports car dynamics with style, innovation and a sense of fun."
