March 2004 was the most successful month for sales of the revolutionary smart fortwo, with 1116 registrations. The fortwo (originally called city-coupé and cabrio) first went on sale in Britain in October 2000.
With 491 registrations, March was also the best month for roadster sales in the UK since the compact and curvaceous model was launched in September 2003.
These two results combined mean that March was also the best ever month for overall smart sales, with 1607 registrations. This is a rise of 16.5% over the previous best sales month: September 2003.
Jeremy Simpson, Head of smart in the UK and Ireland, said: "2004 is an important year for smart with the showroom launch this autumn of the smart forfour. These excellent sales results mean that smart continues to be one of the fastest growing automotive brands in the UK market place and gives us an excellent start to the year. With summer approaching we’re confident that roadster sales will continue to grow and the fortwo has now established itself as the must-have small car."
