Smart Looks Back For The Future
Published: 9th October 2002
These exciting 2-seater sports cars hark back to the original roadsters of the 50s and 60s and represent the start of the smart product offensive as the ultra-cool brand evolves into a full product range. Right-hand drive versions of the roadster and roadster-coupé go on sale in autumn 2003, with left-hand drive models available in the UK from spring 2003.
Also on display is the hit of the summer: the smart crossblade. Without roof, windows or doors, the crossblade takes the feeling of freedom and enjoyment of driving into a new dimension. Only 2000 of this limited edition car have been built worldwide and with a completely waterproof interior it is designed to withstand a typical British summer.
On the stand is a selection from the revolutionary, eco-chic range of smart city-coupés and cabrios. The entry level pure and the luxurious passion are shown in coupé versions. The sporty smart cabrio pulse and top of the range cabrio passion show how much fun open-top motoring can be smart-style.
Dermot Kelly, Director Mercedes-Benz and smart, said: "The British are renowned for their love of small, open-topped sports cars and so it’s fitting that the ultimate roadster of the future is shown in Birmingham so soon after its world premiere. We’re expecting significant enquiries about the roadster at the show and will be collecting names of potential customers in advance of the UK launch next year."
Catch up with the latest developments in the smart range on stand 2450
in Hall 2, at the British International Motor Show at Birmingham from
23 October to 3 November.
