Smart Crossblade: An Expression Of Personal Freedom And Independence

Smart Crossblade

The smart crossblade targets an exclusive clientele who attach great importance to personal freedom and independence. A maximum of 2,000 of the open two-seater, which is recent proof of the innovative power of the smart brand and its cars, have been available from June 2002. The cars are hand built and are numbered consecutively to emphasise their exclusivity.

Left hand drive versions of the smart crossblade have been on sale in the UK since July 2002.

The smart crossblade is equipped with the SUPREX turbo engine familiar from the smart city-coupé and smart cabrio with a power output which has been electronically increased to 70 bhp (52kW). The top speed is electronically limited to 85 mph and the maximum torque is 108 Nm.

The unconventional vehicle has neither a roof, doors, nor a conventional windscreen and gives the feeling of being on a motorcycle with four wheels. The passengers sit in the open air, with a narrow, tinted wind deflector stretched across the cockpit area. A sturdy roll bar ensures occupant protection.

The strikingly styled jet black front and rear end and the prominent, matt black front and rear spoilers give the open two-seater vehicle its unmistakable appearance. The face of the smart crossblade is characterised by metal radiator grilles at the front.

Instead of conventional doors, the smart crossblade is equipped with steel safety bars at passenger shoulder height. They swing upwards with the help of a gas-operated strut. The parts have a matt black plastic cladding and cushioned pads provide a comfortable armrest.

The TRIDION safety cell is clad with matt titanium plastic parts in the area of the roll bar, the B-pillars and the door sills. The minimal matt black painted wheel covers underline the dynamic appearance of the vehicle.

The interior of the smart crossblade is extremely well prepared for the effects of sun, wind and weather. The instrument panel and seats are covered with water-repellent, red plastic. A single-piece plastic tray lines the floor of the interior and four water drainage channels ensure that rainwater drains through the floor of the TRIDION safety cell. This also protects the electric cables against moisture. The seat surfaces each have two water drainage channels in the rear side seams. The driver’s airbag is protected against rain water by a hood made of black, waterproof material.

The whole interior can be protected against rain if necessary. Every smart crossblade is equipped with a tonneau cover, as standard. The black nylon fabric cover can be easily stretched over the car to protect it. The standard safety engineering of the smart crossblade is of a high standard comparable to that of the smart cabrio and the smart city-coupé. The crossblade is equipped with the restraint system familiar from these cars, which includes full-size airbags for driver and passenger in addition to belt tensioners and belt-force limiters. The electronically regulated top speed is identical to that of the city-coupé and the cabrio. The smart crossblade is always fun to drive and an expression of freedom and independence, even at low speeds. The price of the crossblade is £15,990 on the road.
