Automatic For The People

Published: 18th February 2004
Further to massive demand, Tiptronic automatic transmission is now available for customers who like the comfort of an automatic gearshift but prefer four-cylinder engines. This five-speed gearbox has previously been reserved for the powerful six-cylinder 2.5V6 TDI PD and the 2.8 V6 Elegance models.

The state-of-the-art transmission becomes available on the 1.8T 20V 150bhp (Classic, Comfort) and 1.9TDI PD 130bhp (Classic, Comfort, Elegance) this month and provides both manual and automatic gear changing. A five-speed automatic gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter that can be locked depending on the driving situation, this transmission alters the characteristics of the 1.9TDI PD. Whilst the manual produces a maximum torque of 285Nm at 1750rpm, the auto achieves 310Nm at 1900rpm.

The Superb has set the benchmark for Škoda quality and design and has become a very successful model since its launch in May 2002. It has received a number of accolades and continues to surprise the uninitiated with its fantastic rear seat capacity and high levels of standard specification.

  • Finished fourth overall in the prestigious 2003 Auto 1 awards
  • Most Popular Car of the Year 2003 in the Czech Republic
  • The Caravan Club ‘Towcar of the Year 2003’
  • Silver Award in the C- and D-class category of the Golden Wheel Awards 2002
  • ‘Luxury Car of The Year 2002’ by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers

The Superb range is available from an on-the-road price of just £14,255 (entry-level 2.0 Classic), offering outstanding value for money. The majority of sales of this model are of the Classic and Comfort models and these two new variants retail close to the average £17,388 spent on a Superb at £17,255 (Classic 1.8T) and £17,485 (Classic 1.9TDI PD). Fleet sales of Superb in 2003 increased 238% on the previous year to 1285 units and the increased availability of Tiptronic across the range is bound to tempt fleet buyers.
