Skoda Octavia Greenline ReviewSkoda Octavia Greenline Review - Road Test

The Octavia is praised for its strong build in EuroNCAP's crash test report, but it only achieves a four star rating.

A power output of 104 bhp and a peak torque of 184 lb ft are very reasonable, and are enough to make the car feel briskly efficient while still enabling it to achieve remarkably good fuel consumption. Engine flexibility is good, with peak torque sustained over a wide band from 1,500 to 2,500 revs.

Ride and Handling

Standard 15-inch wheels and a well-damped suspension set-up give the Octavia GreenLine good ride comfort over most surfaces. This car rides 15 mm lower than other versions of the Octavia for optimum aerodynamic efficiency, and to help contribute to its impressive fuel economy. The car's handling characteristics are well-balanced and neutral. It corners cleanly and without undue body roll.

Ease of Use

At 4,569 mm in length and 1,769 mm wide, The Octavia is a biggish car with a practical five-door body design. It has a roomy interior and quite a big boot at 585 litres. This extends to 1,455 litres when the standard split-fold rear seat is folded forward in a two-stage action – first the seat squab hinges upwards, then the seat back folds down.

The car has a large tailgate, which is equipped with a handy protruding arm like an umbrella handle, by means of which even a short person can easily reach it to pull the tailgate shut.

Cruise control is included in the list of standard kit, for ease of long-distance motorway driving. Despite its green credentials, this Octavia still has a good towing capacity, with a braked limit of 1,400 kg.

Comfort and Refinement

The driver's seat is height adjustable, and the steering wheel adjusts for height and reach, so a comfortable driving position is easily achieved. The seats are quite firm but nicely supportive, with good lateral hold. Considering that the engine is a 1.6 litre unit in a largish body of car, it does not appear to work too hard and the general noise level is very acceptable, even though sound-proofing on this model has been reduced to save weight. Overall refinement is pretty good too, and the car's NVH – noise, vibration and harshness – is at a reasonable level.
