Luxury car manufacturer Saab took to the slopes this weekend as the official sponsor of the UK’s first ever national level Skier and Boarder Cross event.
The Saab Challenge, which was sponsored by dealerships across Scotland, saw hundreds of budding skiers and snowboarders travel to Cairngorm Mountain to take part in the event. After becoming one of the highest profile sports of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Saab was chosen to sponsor the event because of its strong shared heritage with Snowsport Scotland and Aberdeen Snowsports Club, the organisers of the weekend.
David Pugh, sales and marketing manager at Saab Great Britain, comments: “Here at Saab, we’re really pleased to have been invited to sponsor such an exciting event. It was fantastic to work with Snowsport Scotland and Aberdeen Snowsports Club, and The Saab Challenge was a great way to show our innovation and represent our Scandinavian heritage.”
After the sale of Saab to luxury car maker Spyker Cars earlier in the year, the Saab Challenge also gave the brand the chance to promote its outdoor lifestyle. David continues: “Our recent Saab 9-3x Crossover is an ideal skiers’ car, with cutting-edge technology aimed at those with an active outdoor lifestyle.”
The Saab Challenge Scottish Skier Cross men’s title was won by Scott McBain. Scott, 23, is from Glasgow and a member of the Scottish Alpine Ski Team and British Development Team and a full time ski racer. The ladies title was won by fellow Scottish Team member Sarah Norton, 19, from Carrbridge, near Inverness. Sarah is also a full time ski racer.
The Saab Challenge Scottish Boarder Cross Champion title for men was won by Kevin Clark. Kevin, 23, is an army mechanic and has just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, having also previously served in Iraq. Kevin is member of the British Army Snowboard Team. The ladies title was won by Anna Dawson, 29, from Aviemore, a former Snowboard Instructor at Cairngorm Mountain.
David concludes: “I’d like to offer my congratulations to Scott, Sarah, Malcolm and Anna and I hope that everyone who came along enjoyed the event. We hope to have the chance to work with Snowsport Scotland and Aberdeen Snowsports Club in the future.”
Ewen MacLean, Chairman of Aberdeen Snowsports Club, comments: “We were delighted to have the support of both Saab Great Britain and ski legend Alain Baxter for the first ever National Ski and Boarder Cross event. I hope that everyone who took part had a good time and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event.”
Former Olympic Skier and BBC wintersports pundit Alain Baxter adds: “The Championships at the weekend were thrilling to watch and it was fantastic to see such a prestigious sport coming to the UK. It was also great to see a well-known company like Saab supporting the event. Saab was a key supporter of Scottish skiing during my development and their support is really important to Scottish and British Snowsports.
“Congratulations to the winners and all the competitors who and made it such a memorable inaugural Saab Challenge Scottish Snowcross Championships.”Published 20 April 2010
