Rolls-Royce Centenary Tree Planting Project

Published: 9th December 2004

Two commemorative Lime trees have today been planted by Stefan Krause, a member of BMW Group Board and Sir Ralph Robins former Chairman Rolls-Royce plc, at the manufacturing plant at Chichester in West Sussex. The ceremony was part of a project, launched in Manchester on 4th May 2004, to plant one hundred trees to celebrate the anniversary of the first meeting of Sir Henry Royce and The Honourable Charles Rolls one hundred years ago.

In total over 400,000 trees and shrubs have been planted as part of the landscaping at the manufacturing plant, located on part of the Goodwood Estate in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Designed by British Architects Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners (designer of the Eden Project in Cornwall) the state-of-the-art building complex is sunk partly into the ground and features a 'living roof'. Plant life, combined with landform and drainage features, have a major part to play in structuring the site and integrating the whole complex into the surrounding habitat.

The Centenary tree planting ceremony was attended by Board members of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Simon Robertson, Chairman Rolls-Royce plc, Richard Noble, OBE and John Worthy, director of centenary activities.

"We are delighted that two of these special centenary trees have been planted at Goodwood to be part of the beautiful landscape here and enjoyed by generations to come", said Stefan Krause.

Throughout 2004 trees have been planted around the world, including East Kilbride, Derby and Farnborough in the UK, Chantilly and Indianapolis, Mount Vernon and Washington in the US.
