New 'Slide and Lock' seat system
With seat flexibility important in an MPV, Renault's designers have also been very active, this time creating a new 'Slide and Lock' seat fixing system which will make it even easier to free up interior space in the Espace's cavernous cabin.
With most Espace buyers the seven seats are not just for occasional use, hence all five rear seats are the same substantial seat with a built-in three point seat belt. However on those occasion when the seat is taken out the locking mechanism in the unique floor rails has been simplified. The new layout features simple, sliding floor rails with no independent sliding hooks that need to be located by the seat allowing quick and easy fitting and removal of each of the five rear passenger seats, and will be available on all new models from mid-April next year.
Sleep Safe headrests - Safest car in its
class widens the gap even further
With the highest Euro NCAP crash test scores in its class, the Renault Espace is one of the safest cars on the road. Therefore, it was only right that the designers should strive to improve safety levels even more. The 2005 Espace features a new generation of headrests called 'Sleep Safe', which assist in reducing whiplash injuries, particularly for younger passengers.
Set in adult mode, at first sight the new design appears identical to the current headrests, but in a matter of seconds they can be flipped over to gently hold the neck area of children between the ages of four and ten using a ‘booster cushion seat’ - a feature which is likely to prove invaluable.in the event of a crash during longer journeys when children fall asleep in the back.
Espace range: New prices, colours and availability
The last change to the new Espace range comes in the form of two colours, with Mercury Grey and Nordic Green replacing Mercury Grey and Amazon Green respectively.
In January 2005, Renault will be introducing modest price rises to most of its model ranges, including Espace. The average rise is just under £300 across Espace and Grand Espace. Customers requiring extra rear passenger and luggage capacity will be still be able to chose the 27cm longer Grand Espace for £1,200 extra. Prices range from £19,645 to £34,595
