Renault Modus With New Robotic 'Quickshift5' Gearbox

Published: 9th April 2006
Automatic Mode

In this mode, the Quickshift5 system changes between the five gears, taking into account various factors, including the vehicle speed, rate of acceleration or deceleration, load, road gradient and driving style. The optimum gear for these conditions is then selected, ensuring that the driver always benefits from the maximum responsiveness from the car as well as optimised fuel economy.

Semi-automatic Mode

The driver can change gear at will in semi-automatic mode by merely pushing the gearlever forward to change up or pulling it back to change down. The engine is protected against under- or over-revving, and the gearbox will only change gear as necessary if the driver does not intervene.

Whether being driven in automatic or semi-automatic mode, Quickshift5 also incorporates a ‘creep’ function where the vehicle will move at idling speed when the brakes are released. This facilitates parking manoeuvres and makes traffic queues much easier to bear.

The system features a ‘snow’ mode for moving off in slippery conditions. Selected by using a button at the base of the gearlever, this works by changing the gear shift pattern and allowing the driver to set off in a higher gear than normal, minimising wheelspin and ensuring that the driver maintains control at all times.

The new Quickshift5 system also has the following features to maximise driver comfort and minimise error and stress:

  • Five gear ratios in both automatic and semi-automatic modes, enabling maximum responsiveness and fuel economy at all times
  • Quickshift5 prevents stalling as well as under- and over-revving, improving safety and reducing the risk of damage to the car
  • Engine always operates in its optimum rev range, ensuring responsive yet refined driving
  • Auto-adaptive gear change patterns enable the gear changes to adapt to suit your driving style
  • Automatic style ‘kickdown’ function for easier overtaking
