In response to customer demand, Renault identified two priorities for its new range of audio systems: high sound quality and connectivity.

For optimum audio performance, Renault has joined forces with the digital sound processing specialists, Arkamys. This partnership has led to the development of the 3D Sound by Arkamys system, which is unique on the automotive market and poised to become the Renault core range's new audio benchmark. Arkamys' tailor-developed digital sound processing software incorporated in the radio enables the performance of the existing audio system to be optimised and delivers remarkably superior quality sound.

For its top-end audio system, Renault teamed up with Bose, working with its engineers from an early design stage to produce complete, bespoke audio systems that match the specific acoustic properties of the cabin of each model.

In terms of connectivity features, Renault Laguna Coupe comes with a comprehensive choice, including a standard AUX input. The new multi-function TunePoint system which incorporates jack and USB sockets is also available as an option (standard with the BOSE sound system). The latter is hidden discreetly in the armrest stowage compartment.

With the multi-function TunePoint system, the mode connected to the USB port is shown on the car's dashboard display, including the name of the track being played and the menu tree of the portable player connected. The customer can also listen to, and scroll through, tracks stored on their iPod using the USB connection.

The Renault Laguna Coupe is available with two satellite navigation system options, the full colour integrated Carminat TomTom and for the GT versions a top-end 3D navigation with Bluetooth (DVD system) and 'Birdview' display, voice-activated navigation and an MP3/WMA-compatible six-CD multi-changer. The latter features a double tuner and dual aerial for outstanding radio reception, as well as sound source spatialisation thanks to a digital sound processor.

What We Liked

  • Exterior and interior styling
  • Diesel engine
  • Ride/handling
  • 4Control system
What We Disliked

That 4Control Chassis (4 wheel steering) only standard on the Laguna Coupe GT model and above

What We'd Like To See

4Control Chassis (4 wheel steering) standard throughout the range

The Renault laguna Coupe faces ferocious competition from the likes of the BMW 3 Series Coupe, Mercedes Benz CLK-Class Coupe and the Peugeot 407 Coupe. Badge snobs may have a problem with the French label but overall we were left very impressed by the Renault Laguna Coupe it is a stunning looking car and certainly attracted a lot of attention wherever we went and in our opinion it is quite capable of holding it own against the German competition.
