Comfort and Refinement

The car’s standard kit includes steering wheel height adjustment, height adjustable driving seat, electric windows, electric door mirrors, and MP3 connectivity. Air conditioning is not standard, it adds £575 to the list price.

The Clio has been around a while, with this current model launched in 2006, so a new one is in the pipeline a couple of years hence. When that comes, it will doubtless catch up with the rapidly spreading trend for car cabins to have soft-touch plastic surfaces. Meanwhile this car’s interior feels a touch old-hat with some cheap-looking materials and all the plastics hard to the touch. This makes the Clio’s cabin look a bit outdated compared with some of its fresher rivals.

The engine is a bit rattley on start-up, but once it warms up and gets going the noise level settles down to a perfectly acceptable thrum.

Safety and Security

There are Isofix child seat mounting points on the front passenger seat and the two outer rear seats, so the Clio Eco is well equipped to be a good budget car for a young family. It has a five-star rating for occupant protection under Euro NCAP testing, with a four-star rating for child passenger protection.

Driver and passenger front and side airbags are standard and they are two-stage auto-assist. Seatbelt pre-tensioners are also standard.

Standard anti-lock brakes also feature standard brakeforce distribution and electronic brake assist.

At over 5 mph the car doors automatically lock as part of the R.A.I.D.feature (Renault Anti Intruder Device). There is an insurance industry approved (Thatcham category 2) engine immobiliser.

Infotainment

The car has a standard fitment RDS radio-CD player with four 20w speakers and an AUX-in socket for connection to an external multimedia source. Sound quality is reasonable. Our test car was fitted with optional Carminat TomTom Live navigation at an extra £470.

  • Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi ECOnetic
  • Kia Rio 1.4CRDi EcoDynamics
  • Peugeot 207 1.6 HDi Oxygo
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi EcoFLEX
What We Liked
  • The high economy
  • The low CO2
  • Road tax exemption
  • Congestion charge exemption
  • Compact size
  • Low running costs
What We Disliked
  • Limited interior space
  • Tyres not quite as grippy as standard non-eco design
What We Would Like To See
  • All hard surfaces in the cabin
Conclusion

We like the Renault Clio's roomy compactness and chirpy character, and this Eco version is the especially frugal one with the strongest green credentials. It is a relatively modest performer but has the welcome bonus of lower fuel bills and a lower CO2 output than most of its rival hatchback superminis. Worth considering if you want a small car with optimum economy.
