The Peugeot 407 SW - Luggage Compartment | Part Three

The luggage compartment

The luggage space is an integral part of the passenger compartment and offers a very neat and tidy but nevertheless functional area.

The main load space of 430 dm³ is increased by two side storage areas with a volume of 9 and 12 dm³ respectively. Its ingenious shape offers a width never less than 1100 mm (wider than the outgoing 406 estate and many competitor vehicles in the class) and is perfectly designed to accommodate and protect the items placed in it. A distinctive feature of the boot area is the clean interior shape that makes every inch 'useable' a benefit provided by the inclined shock absorbers that do not intrude into the boot. This is a feature shared with the saloon.

A wide ribbed stainless steel panel protects the 1071 mm wide load sill. This figure represents the minimum width of the boot aperture which is larger than many competitor products. The floor of the boot is lined with thick pile carpet with four narrow support bars, ensuring that two suitcases can easily be laid flat side by side.

Lined with a thick soundproof membrane, the boot carpet is removable and has a lifting strap and hook extension that provide access to a normal sized spare wheel, stored in a wheel well under the load area. The sides of the luggage compartment are carpeted and house two side storage areas behind two access flaps. On the right-hand side, a six CD auto-changer and JBL bass box can be installed adjacent to the storage area.

A luggage net can be attached to the floor by means of four securing rings, and a 12 V socket is fitted on many versions.

To keep the contents of the luggage compartment hidden from view, the 407 SW is equipped with a cleverly designed rigid load cover lined with carpet and consisting of a flat area accompanied by two folding flaps, and a cover fitted with a central handle. This design ensures easy access to the luggage compartment regardless of whether the tailgate or rear screen only is open.

Storage and transportation

The seats are bursting with innovations to maximise the interior space and can be folded if necessary, while allowing the 407 SW to seat up to five passengers comfortably.

On all versions, the seat cushions and seat backs of the rear bench seat are divided 2/3-1/3 and fold down to form a virtually flat surface, without the need to remove the curved head restraints, which are particularly compact in the lowered position. The effective length then becomes 1700 mm, increasing the overall load volume to 1121 dm³ according to the VDA standard.

A ski flap is provided as standard or as an option, depending on versions, and allows the transportation of long objects with four occupants, without the need to fold down the seat back. It can be accessed from inside the passenger compartment to facilitate handling.

On all versions, the front passenger seat is "modular". This innovative feature creates an effective load length of 2700 mm between the inside of the tailgate and the glove box for the occasional transportation of very long and bulky objects, while enabling two occupants to be accommodated.

A luggage net for tall loads, available as an option, makes it possible to transport bulky items in complete safety; it can be installed behind the first or second row seats, by means of anchorage points incorporated in the roof structure of the car, that are accessible via hidden covers.
