Covering over 750 square miles and serving a population of more than half a million residents, Coventry & Warwickshire Ambulance NHS Trust has put a huge emphasis on the vehicles used in its emergency fleet. The addition of a Nissan Patrol to the fleet has enabled the Trust to benefit from a fully equipped, emergency 4x4 ambulance with the ability to cope with adverse weather conditions and any emergency that may be thrown in its direction.
The Nissan Patrol is one of the first of its kind to carry the European Standard Colour of Euro Yellow. Euro Yellow is being introduced throughout Europe to make all emergency vehicles instantly recognisable. Converted by ATT Patworth in Cambridge, the Patrol is a fully equipped 4x4 ambulance with the capacity to carry stretchers and thanks to the high roof, it gives the crews an enhanced working area.
Graham Cann, Fleet Manager, commented: "The fact that it gives the paramedics an enhanced working area which enables them to examine and treat patients, was a major factor in us deciding to choose the Patrol. Many vehicles in a similar class to the Patrol do not offer a high roof which gives such flexibility."
Carrying the same equipment as a frontline ambulance the Patrol is fully equipped with satellite navigation, which linked directly to the radio communication and data keypad ensures directions are available to the crew as soon as emergency calls are taken, saving precious seconds.
Cann continued: "The Patrol was invaluable during the snow storms earlier this year and the high specification of the vehicle has also enabled us to serve events such as horse-racing at Warwick and Stratford as well as Speedway."
In addition to the unique Patrol, Coventry & Warwickshire Ambulance NHS Trust’s fleet also includes 11 Interstars. These vehicles were converted by Oughtred & Harrison in Goole, Yorkshire, and operate in Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire as patient transport vehicles. Three of the vehicles can carry stretchers as well as seated passengers and the remaining eight vehicles have wheelchair and walking patient capability.
Dave Murfitt, Fleet Sales Director, Nissan GB Ltd said: "We are delighted to be working with Coventry & Warwickshire Ambulance NHS Trust, Oughtred & Harrison and ATT Patworth to produce such important vehicles, and look forward to seeing many more introduced into service both by Coventry & Warwickshire Ambulance NHS Trust and across the UK."Published 30 May 2004
