John Tinham, twice a runner-up in the Top Technician competition, has secured the title of Top Technician 2005. His name was announced at the Awards Ceremony held at Brands Hatch race circuit, hosted by sponsors Crypton, eXponentia, ReMIT and Vauxhall Trade Club.

John Tinham, owner and manager of Chelmsford-based garage John Tinham Motor Engineer was thrilled to walk away with the title. "I'm ecstatic," he said, "especially after being a runner-up in 2003 and 2004."

Prior to announcing the winner, Dave Garratt, Chairman of Judges and Chief Executive of the Garage Equipment Association, spoke of how knowledge and skills are vital attributes of competent technicians but curiosity is what makes a Top Technician. "John Tinham makes time to keep abreast of new technology and is committed to training - his passion and enthusiasm sets him apart from the crowd ," he concluded.

John and wife Karen were delighted with the win and the cash prize of £2,000 which they plan to take with them on holiday later this year. "It's our dolphin money," explained Karen. "We have always wanted to swim with dolphins and this win will make our dream come true." John and Karen deserve a break following a busy and at times stressful year, which included for John a spell in hospital.

Runners-up Iain Kershaw and Clive Atthowe both came a close joint second. All three finalists have signed up for next year's competition.
