West Ham shot to the top of the premier league of personalised registration numbers today when the licence plate WE57 HAM went for a record-breaking £57,000 at auction. A fierce bidding war erupted at the DVLA Personalised Registrations sale in Bishop’s Stortford as dozens of die-hard fans of the club battled it out for the ultimate Hammers status symbol. And that sent the price rocketing and forced the winning bidder, who bid anonymously over the internet, to smash the previous record for a football-related registration - the £36,000 paid for AR53 NAL in 2004. Damian Lawson, Marketing Manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, was delighted by the huge sum fetched by the star lot. As darker evenings return this weekend, RoSPA is urging all road users to play a part in trying to reduce the toll of deaths and injuries made worse by the current way clocks are changed. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents wants people not only to take extra care as the nights draw in, but also to continue to press politicians to introduce a system which would bring lighter evenings all year round. The acquisition of Hewden Tools by Lex customer Speedy Hire PLC has seen the UK’s leading contract hire company complete one of the largest sale and leaseback agreements in its history. Lex handed over a cheque for £4. 5m, after it purchased 740 cars and vans from Hewden Tools and leased them back on the day the acquisition by Speedy Hire was announced to the Stock Exchange on the 1st August 2007. This extends the sole supply Speedy Hire fleet on contract hire with Lex to over 2,500 vehicles, including more than 1,500 light commercials and nearly 1,000 cars. Some of Hewden’s fleet are on short term contracts and will be replaced in 2008, while the rest have been transferred onto Speedy Hire’s 30-month and 36-month replacement policy for vans and cars respectively. From 1 January Lex will begin to rebrand the Hewden vehicles as Speedy Hire. the full story

The real benefits of ‘green’ driving came into sharp focus last week when competitors in the 2007 AA/ALD Automotive MPG Marathon proved beyond doubt that skilful eco-driving can dramatically reduce the cost of motoring and cut the amount of CO2 emissions produced by Britain's 30 million motorists. The RAC Foundation welcomed the commitment to an increase in transport spending but stressed that a greater proportion must be spent on roads as 93 of passenger journeys and the majority of freight are carried by road.
