Swansea-based DVLA Personalised Registrations is riding the crest of Wales’ recent rugby Six Nations success - by teaming up with one of the country’s most famous sporting sons, boxer Joe Calzaghe, to promote its forthcoming WEL 5H-themed auction. The undisputed World Super Middleweight Champion aptly known as “The Pride of Wales” - arguably the most famous Welshman walking the planet - is promoting the unique registrations which will go under the hammer at the Celtic Manor Hotel near Newport, Gwent, on April 16-18. And with WEL 5H, along with the native CY51 MRU (Cymru), going under the hammer, the BOX 33 - a registration also being featured to honour Joe’s involvement - who boasts a phenomenal 44-fight unbeaten record could well be tempted to make a bid himself despite being in America for the final countdown to his latest fight with Bernard Hopkins. Joe, the reigning BBC Sports Personality of the Year, said: “It’s a knock-out WEL 5H plate and I hope to do my own knocking out for Wales when I face Hopkins. ”The Celtic Manor Hotel auction is DVLA Personalised Registrations’ ‘home coming’ event and though the catalogue will lean towards the Welsh fraternity with plates relating to popular names like BAN 90R, CLW 7D, NEA 7H, CER 7S, FFF 10N, DYL 9N and MEG 44N. the full story

A ‘CAR TAX TRAP’ created by the latest budget will hit the existing drivers of typical family cars, from next year, but fail to address the real issue of older and bigger polluters on today’s roads. That’s according to CAP, the UK automotive industry’s provider of benchmark used car values and technical data. Hardest hit of all will be drivers of the automatic variants of larger-engine cars up to seven years old who will be hit by a double whammy of huge increases in Vehicle Excise Duty and more rapid depreciation which could severely affect values. CAP believes that next year’s proposed increases in Vehicle Excise Duty are ill thought out due to their disproportionate impact on ‘ordinary’ used car drivers while doing nothing to encourage the drivers of older ‘dirtier’ vehicles to switch into newer more efficient cars. To illustrate this CAP experts point to the example of a Volkswagen Passat 2. 0 automatic registered since March 1 2001 (Y registration). the full story

The UK’s only dedicated practical motoring magazine for modern cars, Car Mechanics, celebrates 50 years of publishing with its April 2008 edition, on sale from Thursday 20th March; this makes it the second oldest motoring monthly publication in existence. Launched in April 1958, the editor was John Mills, who stated that “Car Mechanics has one simple purpose: to help you run your car on the most economical basis. ” That ethos still holds true to this day; so while the cars have undoubtedly changed, Car Mechanics magazine remains the only newsstand publication that reaches out to the technically minded motoring enthusiast with hints and tips on maintaining modern cars. The current editor of Car Mechanics, Peter Simpson, who has been in the hot seat since 1995, believes the magazine has remained relevant to the reader by slowly evolving to adapt to the challenges of the modern motorist: “Today’s cars contain computers up to ten times more powerful than those on Apollo 11 and are better made and more efficient than ever. the full story
