Sales of the iconic "London" cab have smashed through the 2,000 barrier in Scotland.

The latest incarnation of the taxi, the TXII - designed and manufactured by LTI Vehicles - was launched in March 2002 as the most modern, comfortable and environmentally-friendly version of the model which has become recognisable around the world.

This month, John Paton & Son, the official LTI Vehicles dealership in Glasgow, revealed taxi drivers north of the border had been taking to the TXIIs in droves. More than 2,000 TXIIs have been sold in the last three-and-a-half years - both new and used - giving Paton’s the best sales rate in the UK.

To mark the milestone, Andrew Overton, Market Development Consultant for LTI Vehicles, visited the dealership to present key members of staff with performance awards.

As well as the vehicles themselves proving popular with taxi drivers across Scotland, Billy Paton, owner of John Paton & Son, said it was the extra care and understanding of the marque that his staff gave to customers that had made them so successful, coupled with high standards of technical ability.

"When my father opened his taxi garage in Glasgow in 1957, he had been a taxi driver for a number of years," he said.

"The driving force behind setting up Paton’s Taxis was John’s aim to give cab drivers better support through a dedicated service.

"Perhaps the most important aspect of developing our people has been to ensure that they have the best technical training. That’s why our technicians have always attended all the LTI factory and approved supplier training courses. In that way, we know that they will be delivering a quality and reliable repair for our customers which is superior to others."

More than 8,920 TXIIs have come out of the Coventry LTI Vehicles factory since production started.

Matthew Cheyne, Sales and Marketing Director for LTI Vehicles, said: "Breaking the 2,000 barrier is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our dealerships in Scotland.

"The TXII really has taken the classic London cab to another level, combining familiar looks with the latest technology, comfort and safety features. We are delighted so many drivers - and passengers - are opting for it."
