Enduron range sets new standards for clean engines and long-term particle filter purity
Castrol has launched its new Euro 4 compliant products, Castrol Enduron Euro 4 and Castrol Enduron Euro 4 low SAPS. These two new products have been specifically designed to offer optimum performance for the ACEA E6 and ACEA E7 heavy-duty diesel engine oil specifications, and make a considerable contribution towards the compliance of Euro 4 legislation.
ACEA E6 and ACEA E7 oil specifications were introduced in October 2004 and represent a substantial increase in the performance of oils. These standards have been launched in anticipation of the Euro 4 exhaust emission limits that will ensure that all new engine designs sold within the EU from October 2005 will emit lower levels of nitrogen oxide gases and particulate matter.
Castrol has responded to the challenge of new engine technology and industry specifications by making sure it has the right products for Euro 4 trucks. These include:
- Castrol Enduron Euro 4 - This ACEA E7 compliant product is a high-performance diesel engine oil for use in Euro 4 vehicles that do not require Low SAPS technology. It has the approval of all the main European commercial vehicle manufactures and, through the utilisation of advanced Castrol synthetic technologies, enables improved operating reliability, less down-time and longer engine life.
- Castrol Enduron Euro 4 low SAPS - This revolutionary, new ACEA E6 engine oil reduces the emission of sulphate ash, phosphorous and sulphur by up to 73 per cent, to keep the exhaust gas after-treatment system clean. It has been developed to achieve advanced wear protection and engine cleanliness with particular attention to the requirements of MAN and Mercedes-Benz vehicles for low SAPS oils.
Steve Goodier, Technical Manager for Castrol comments: "The Enduron Euro 4 range of oils utilise Clean Performance Technology to keep the exhaust after-treatment systems of modern heavy goods vehicles as clean as possible. It prevents deposits and residues that may lead to blockage and damage to the catalytic converter as well as significantly reducing the build up of harmful residue on the piston, piston rings and bearings."
The ACEA E7 specification has evolved from the existing E5 standard. The E5 standard demands the ability to disperse soot efficiently to limit abrasion and the new E7 specification has added a number of additional wear-related performance tests to further advance to oil technology. For example, the Mack T-10 test is aimed primarily at abrasive wear of piston rings, cylinder liners and bearings, which can cause problems in engines where sooty particles in the exhaust gases are being fed back into combustion chambers by exhaust gas recirculation systems.
The E6 specification lubricants, such as Castrol Enduron Euro 4 low SAPS, demand a significant cut in sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur content and are most suitable for Euro 4 engines with exhaust after-treatment oxidation catalysts and diesel particulate filters. Previous E2-E5 oils have no more than two per cent sulphated ash by mass and this limit is to be halved for E6 specification.
