Published: 3rd January 2008

With cold weather warnings plaguing the news, Avis UK offers some top tips on winter driving;

Avis’ Top Tips on winter driving
  1. Always park your vehicle downhill and in the direction you want to travel the next morning
  2. Always accelerate gently when starting the vehicle and with a manual car use the highest gear at which you can move without stalling (usually 2nd gear)
  3. Always engage the clutch before starting the engine of your vehicle
  4. Ensure that the engine on your vehicle has warmed up before setting off.
  5. If possible do not use the handbrake when your vehicle is stationary or parked. If this is not possible do not pull the handbrake up fully in case it freezes in position
  6. If your vehicle starts to skid DO NOT hit the brakes. Ease off the accelerator and steer into the direction of the skid until you gain control
  7. When your vehicle is parked ensure the front and back windscreen wipers are away from the windscreen.
  8. Be prepared - always plan your journey and check weather forecasts
  9.  Always have a good amount of petrol in the vehicle and ensure you have an emergency pack with warm clothing and refreshments

“There’s nothing worse than being caught in the snow,” says Daniel McCarthy, Commercial Director, Avis UK. “Driving in sub-zero temperatures can be absolutely treacherous; we are hoping our tips will help drivers feel safer and more comfortable on their journeys.”
